Interviews for specialists  

 

If your application was selected, you would be invited to ICRC headquarters in Geneva for a day of interviews. You will have one-on-one interviews with two or three members of ICRC staff from different units. The interviews last from 60 to 90 minutes each.

You will also take written and oral language tests in English, French and any other language mentioned in your application.

Engagement procedure

 

Once the ICRC has approved your application to work in the field, we will offer you a contract.

 

There are two kinds of contract:

  • Fixed-term: usually offered to technical specialists and health professionals who cannot stay abroad for long
  • Open-ended: usually offered to delegates, administrators, secretaries, IT specialists, etc.

 

A three-month trial period starts on the first day of the contract.

Salary, social benefits and a number of technical matters are dealt with during the recruitment interviews.

Surgeon

 

Task

The ICRC surgeon works as part of surgical teams deployed when existing facilities are unable to care for the war-wounded. He/she may also treat victims of accident and illness who require emergency surgery. The teams work either in hospitals built, equipped, supplied and managed by the ICRC, or in existing hospitals that the ICRC provides with supplies, equipment and back-up for local personnel, in some cases assisting with training.

 

Selection requirements

  • ideal age: 30 to 50
  • prepared to accept unaccompanied posting for the duration of the assignment (minimum 3 months)
  • excellent command of English and/or French
  • qualified surgeon
  • minimum 2 years postgraduate experience as a surgeon
  • ability to independently carry out procedures such as laparotomy with intestinal resection and anastomosis, vascular sutures, skin grafts, amputations, etc.
  • experience in the conservative treatment of fractures with POP, skeletal traction, external fixator, an asset
  • driving license (for manual transmission vehicles)
  • valid specialist registration in their home country is mandatory

 

Primary health care (PHC) doctor / nurse

 

Task

Based on the needs of specific target groups , support to one or more existing health facilities, or through an independent ICRC clinic, the Primary Health Care (PHC) Doctor / Nurse ensures the organization and management of Health activities for patients and/or a population in accordance with  the context,  ICRC protocols and universal hygiene standards, by providing  quality and continuity of care.

Ensure supervision and training of a team.

Protection of the medical mission among the basic components of the programme (collection of allegations of disrespect for the medical mission, reporting, follow-up…).

 

Functions and responsibilities

  • Health activities
  • Assessment of the health situation in a community
  • Support and supervision of local health-care facilities
  • Training of national staff
  • Management and treatment of  Communicable  and Non-Communicable Diseases
  • Set-up and implementation of  immunization programmes
  • Detection and treatment of acute malnutrition
  • Response to health emergencies
  • Clinical management for victims of rape
  • Implementation and supervision of various aspects of the reproductive health package
  • If necessary prescribe relevant treatment based on ICRC and national guidelines and protocols
  • Ensure quality medical follow-up and if necessary refer to other health facilities
  • Apply hygiene standards in all health activities
  • Pharmacy and medical equipment management
  • Prepare orders for medical supplies
  • Identify new needs, in terms of drugs and medical equipment, in line with pathologies treated in his/her health practice
  • Organization and team management
  • Organize and work in collaboration with other departments
  • Supervize, motivate and train a multidisciplinary health team, in particular staff carrying out medical activities (formal and informal training)
  • Propose protocols and guideline for medical activities if they do not  exist (after validation by the technical referent)
  • Ensure respect for implementation of ICRC and national protocols and guidelines in order to ensure continuity of care
  • Monitoring, analysis and reporting
  • Regular follow-up of the activities, including order of medical items (drugs and material) training, supervision, monitoring and reporting
  • Monitoring of  the health  activities, analysing them in the context, with a public health approach, and make proposals for further development, if necessary

 

Selection requirements

  • ideal age: 30 to 50
  • prepared to accept unaccompanied postings for the first two assignments (minimum 12 months each)
  • excellent command of English; French and Spanish an asset
  • registered nurse (Psychiatric nurses and nurse-midwives must have extensive experience in general medical and surgical care. Nurses with qualifications in maternal and child-health care must have some experience working with adults.) or,
  • medical doctor  (university degree in Medicine)
  • valid medical or nursing license to practice in his/her own country
  • public health diploma, an asset
  • at least five years’ post-graduate experience (both nurse and medical doctor)
  • driving licence (for manual transmission vehicles)
  • fully conversant with IT tool

 

Physiotherapist (internal medicine)

 

Task

The ICRC physiotherapist supervises physiotherapy care in hospitals, especially for traumatic and neurological patients, or in physical rehabilitation centres providing treatments to amputees, paraplegic and other physically disabled. He/she provides clinical and technical support and appropriate training at various levels to national staffs working in the field of physiotherapy. He/she manages the physiotherapy activities within hospital and physical rehabilitation programmes and supervises the establishment of new physiotherapy departments and the installation of their equipment.

 

Selection requirements

  • ideal age: 25 to 45
  • prepare to accept unaccompanied postings for the first two missions (minimum 12 months each)
  • excellent command of English; French and Arabic an asset
  • recognized diploma training as physiotherapist
  • at least three years’ professional experience in hospital or physical rehabilitation centre
  • humanitarian field experiences are an asset
  • driving license (for manual transmission vehicles)

 

 

Paediatrician

 

Task

The doctor works as part of the ICRC hospital teams. The ICRC hospital teams work either in hospitals built, equipped, supplied and managed by the ICRC, or in existing hospitals to which the ICRC provides supplies and equipment, reinforces local personnel and, in some cases, assists with training. The doctor ensures a quality care as well as organization and management of services (paediatrics, internal medicine, outpatient, emergency room and intensive care unit) in close collaboration with her/his local counterparts.

 

Selection requirements

 

  • ideal age: 30 to 60
  • prepare to accept non family postings for the duration of the assignment
  • minimum 6 months assignment
  • medical doctor : university degree in Medicine
  • valid registration in the home country
  • excellent command of English and/or French
  • minimum 3 years post graduate clinical experience
  • good experience in resource limited settings with other medical organizations
  • post graduate tropical medicine a strong asset
  • valid manual driving licence (automatic not accepted)

 

 

Emergency Room Specialist

(Anaesthetist / Surgeon / ICU Doctor)

 

Task

The ICRC Emergency Room Specialist works as part of a hospital teams deployed when existing facilities are unable to care for persons injured as a result of war. He/she may also treat victims of accident and illness. The teams work either in hospitals built, equipped, supplied and managed by the ICRC, or in existing hospitals to which the ICRC provides supplies and equipment, reinforces local personnel and, in some cases, assists with training.

 

Selection requirements

  • ideal age: 30 to 60
  • prepare to accept non family postings for the duration of the assignment
  • minimum 3 months assignment
  • excellent command of English and/or French
  • qualified Emergency Room Specialist / Anaesthetist / ICU Doctor / Surgeon
  • minimum 2 years post-specialist-registration experience
  • extensive experience in Emergency Room
  • ATLS, ALS or MIMMS certification a strong asset
  • valid specialist registration in the home country
  • valid manual driving licence (automatic not accepted)

 

 

Orthotist-Prosthetist

 

Task

This position involves supervising the manufacture of prostheses and orthoses, providing technical and clinical support to national personnel working in P&O projects, providing support in the management of physical rehabilitation activities, setting up new P&O centres.

 

Selection requirements

  • ideal age: 25 to 45
  • prepared to accept unaccompanied postings for the first two missions (minimum 12 months each, without being accompanied by the family/partner)
  • excellent command of Arabic and English; French an asset
  • recognized training as an orthotist-prosthetist (ISPO Cat.1 or equivalent)
  • at least three years’ professional experience in the manufacture of prostheses and orthoses
  • humanitarian field experience an asset
  • driving licence (for manual transmission vehicles)

 

 

Anesthesiologist

 

Task

The ICRC anesthesiologist works as part of surgical teams deployed when existing facilities are unable to care for persons injured as a result of war. He/she may also treat victims of accident and illness. The teams work either in hospitals built, equipped, supplied and managed by the ICRC, or in existing hospitals to which the ICRC provides supplies and equipment, reinforces local personnel and, in some cases, assists with training.

 

Selection requirements

  • ideal age: 30 to 50
  • prepare to accept unaccompanied posting for the duration of the assignment (minimum 3 months)
  • excellent command of English and/or French
  • qualified anesthesiologist
  • minimum 2 years postgraduate experience as an anesthesiologist
  • ICU and resuscitation experience required
  • driving license (for manual transmission vehicles)
  • valid specialist registration in their home country is mandatory

 

 

Midwife Nurse

 

Task

ICRC midwife works as part of the medical team providing services to victims directly or indirectly affected by conflict. The team is multinational and works alongside locally hired personnel.

 

Selection criteria

  • Ideal age : 30 to 50 years
  • Available for a period of 3 (minimum) to 6 months
  • Licensed Registered Nurse Midwife
  • A minimum of 5 years solid professional experience in midwifery including actively working as midwife at least for the last 3-years
  • Ability to work independently as a midwife
  • Excellent command of French and English
  • Driving license (must cover manual transmission - a license for automatic transmission vehicles only is not sufficient)

 

 

Ward nurse

 

Task

ICRC hospital ward nurses work as part of the surgical/medical team providing hospital services to victims directly or indirectly affected by conflicts. The patients are men, women and children suffering from trauma, surgical and medical emergencies. The hospital team is multinational and works alongside locally hired personnel.

 

Selection requirements

  • Ideal age : 30 to 50 years
  • Available for a period of minimum 6 months.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse
  • A minimum of 5 years solid professional experience in nursing including actively working as a nurse at least for the last 3-years, paediatrics, obstetric-gynaecology, surgery, medicine
  • Excellent command of English
  • Driving licence (must cover manual transmission - a licence for automatic transmission vehicles only is not sufficient)
  • Valid nursing registration in your home country is essential
