Historical information

 

1840 - the Emperor Mykola 1 signed the rescript concerning organization of the Faculty of Medicine at Kyiv University of St. Volodymyr. 1841 - the opening of the Faculty of Medicine of St. Volodymyr Kyiv University. On September 23 (9) professor Kozlov delivered the first lecture on anatomy. On September 26 (12) professor Karavayev delivered the first lecture on encyclopaedia and methodology of medicine. 1843 - professor Karavayev become the first Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. 1853 - theopeningof dissecting room. 1881 - the Student’s Scientific Society “Clinical society of the medical student” was organized. The student Kysil was the organizer of this Society. Later he was known as famous pediatrician and public figure.1885 - surgical and therapeutic clinics were built. 1888 - obstetric clinic was built. 1920 - Kyiv Institute of Health Care was built. This Institute unites the Faculty of Medicine of St. Volodymyr University. Medical Institute for Women and Faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian State University. 1921 - Kyiv Institute of Health Care was renamed as Kyiv State Medical Academy.1921 - Kyiv State Medical Academy was renamed as Kyiv Medical Institute. 1930 - organization of the Faculties of Preventive Medicine, Preventive Sanitary and Pediatrics. 1941 - Kyiv Medical Institute was evacuated to Kharkiv and later to Cheliabinsk. 1943 - the Institute restarted its lectures in Kyiv. 1944 - the Kyiv Medical Institute was rewarded by the order of the Red Banner. 1946 - the Kyiv Medical Institute was named after the Academician O.O.Bogomolets, the President of the Academy of Sciences of Ukrainian SSR. 1965 - the Museum of the History of Medicine on the basis of the Institute was organized. From 1982 it becomes the Museum of Medicine of Ukraine. 1992 - the Institute was reorganized on the Ukrainian State Medical University after Academician O.O.Bogomolets. 1995 - by the Order of the President of Ukraine the University was given the status of the O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University. 2001 - celebration of 160 anniversary of the National O.O.Bogomolets Medical University.

Nowadays the NMU is the higher educational establishment with powerful, educational, scientific and clinical potential. 80 departments of University unite above 1200 scientific-pedagogical staff, among which – 27 Academicians and Corresponding Members of National Academy of Science (NAS), Academy of Medical Science (AMS), Academy of Pedagogical Science of Ukraine; 24 Academicians of Public Academies, 37 members of International Academies of Science and other international organizations; 55 Honored Scientists and Technicians, Honored Workers of Higher School, Honored Workers of National Education, Honored Doctors of Ukraine, 58 winners of State and Special Prize, 178 Doctors of Sciences 164 Professors, 714 Candidate of Sciences, 323 Assistant Professors.

Study at the University is carried out according to the licenses of State Accreditation Commission, which certifies the  right of the  O.O.Bogomolets National Medical University for realization of educational activities in directions, specialties and educational - qualification levels. Educational activities at the University are carried out at 11 faculties:

-    Faculty of Medicine – 4

-    Faculty of Medicine of Chernigiv branch of the NMU – 1

-    Faculty of Dentistry – 1

-    Faculty of Pharmacy (full-time and correspondence forms of tuition) – 1

-    Faculty of physicians’ training for the Armed forces of Ukraine -1

-    Faculty of Medical Psychology – 1

-   Faculty for teachers’ advanced training of higher medical educational establishments of 1-4 levels of accreditation-1

-    Post-Graduate Training – 1

The O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University is basic in Bolonskyi process

Every year at the NMU 150-300 scheduled and economic SRW ( Scientific Research Works) are made. 182 SRW are completed in 2004.

8 SRW are made on assignment of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, 4-on State order. 182-on economic and 24 -on different subjects.

148 patents are received in 2004. 1500 scientific works are published. 12 textbooks are issued. 101 educational supplies and 32 monographs are issued.

172 SRW are planed to do in 2004: 5-on Ministryof Health of Ukraine assignment, 4-on State program, 1 for State order, 78-on economic, 62-on different subjects. The student’s work in societies promotes the improvements of quality of preparation of students. Students involve into independent research work. They take part in the different scientific forums of youth in Ukraine and abroad.

Treatment and consultative work is provided at 53 clinical Departments accommodated on basis of 59 medical facilities. The number of beds exceeds 7000.

On the clinical bases of the University are used: 47 ultrasonic apparatus, circular tomographic system, 3 computerazed tomographic system, 17 complete set of equipment for carrying out laparoscopy interventions, 27 fibrogastroscopes and colonoscope. Every year 250 thousand of patients are treated on clinical bases of the faculties. 60 thousand of operations are carried out on the Surgical Department. Over 10 thousand of birth deliveries are carried out.

The main clinical base of the Faculty of Dentistry is the Stomatology Clinic of the NMU. Every year it accepts more than 330 patients. It gives students a chance to practise.

Combined system of education of future doctors and pharmacists has for an object to prepare a new generation of national intelligence, to increase cultural potential, which provide high effectiveness of activity of the future specialists.

Educational work is directed on finding social experience, forming national self-awareness, humanistic morality, felling of humanity and mercy, dignity and responsibility for health of people.

Elective courses, lecture halls, seminars, social-psychological programs, . psychoanalytic services, educational, sports and social-charitable programs are used for achievement of raising questions.

5371 arrangements devoted to great events were conducted in the University in 2002-2003.

There are 36 groups of amateur performances two of them are folk ones in the University. There are 35 sport clubs there.

Students self-government in the NMU is a Student Parliament. The head of Students’ Parliament is the member of the University’s Scientific Board, where he represents interests of students’.

Social protection of employees and students is an important component of the work of Administration. At the disposal of employees and students are: -    Library which contains 750000 volumes of scientific, educational and fiction literature; -    Local computer network with access to the Internet; -    Newspaper “Medychni Kadry”; -    Sanatorium; -    Sports Centre; -    Sport Complex; -    University club; -    Excursion program “Ukraine is my Motherland”; -    Historical-educational “Club of Admirers of Old Kyiv”; -    the University “Ukrainian Svitlitsa”, where meetings with famous persons are carried out; -    Canteen; -    Medical care on the basis of clinical Departments; -    Treatment in the sanatoriums.

The improvement of high modern levels of training of future doctors and pharmacists is possible because of active international cooperation. It is: -    Participation in the international educational and scientific projects; -    Cooperation with international organizations; -    Probation of teaching staff and students abroad; -    Cooperation with foreign educational establishments as for legalization of documents about medical education which was received in MNU.
The NMU cooperates with famous Universities of the world. They are: Illinois (USA), Athens Kapodystrian and National School of Health Care (Greece), Bari University (Italy), Vurzburg University (Germany), Tuluza University (France), Bristol University (Great Britain). In 2003 the University become a co- founder of Interuniversity center of Science and cooperation of East and South-East Europe (Italy). 33 Universities and 14 States of European regions were entered it.

For more than 40 years at the University have been trained more than 2000 physicians from 54 countries of the world. At present at the NMU are 576 students from 42 foreign countries.
