1. Providing a package of documents for translation, legalization and apostille

 

A medical / dental practitioner needs primarily to be granted registration with the Medical Council Malta. Please provide us with all the documents listed in the Check list. If possible please also send us the transcript of your qualification. Having received a duly filled application form and all the documents listed by post, the Medical Council will discuss your case and inform you accordingly. The Medical Council will not be able to proceed with your application until the Original (for verification) / Authenticated copies are received by mail. An Original Certificate of Good Standing, that is, a document issued from the competent authority of the country where you are registered and practicing (valid for three months) needs to be provided.

 

2. Testing language skills for the interview

3.Arrival. Registration with the Medical Council Malta

A medical / dental practitioner needs primarily to be granted registration with the Medical Council Malta (I am attaching an application form and a set of explanatory notes). Please provide us with all the documents listed in the Check list. If possible please also send us the transcript of your qualification. Having received a duly filled application form and all the documents listed by post, the Medical Council will discuss your case and inform you accordingly. Medical Council will not be able to proceed with your application until the Original (for verification) / Authenticated copies are received by mail. Please also note that an Original Certificate of Good Standing, that is, a document issued from the competent authority of the country where you are registered and practicing (valid for three months) needs to be provided.

 

4.Registration with the Specialist Accreditation Committee (SAC)  

After getting registration with the Medical Council, if being a specialist, one must then apply with the Specialist Accreditation Committee (SAC). Please email to the Registrar SAC, Mr Gordon Cachia (gordon.cachia@gov.mt)

 

5.Medical Council Malta Statutory Examination (MCMSE) for Medical Practitioners:

The MCMSE is normally conducted twice a year (April and September) and the next is scheduled in April 2014. However further details will only be available in due course. To date the Council is able to provide the following information.

The examination will consist of an interview (viva voce) on the following subjects:

-          Medicine

-          Surgery

-          Paediatrics

-          Obstetrics and Gynaecology

-          Pathology

-          Psychiatry

-          General Practice

-          Public Health

The examination will be held in the English language.

All subjects are failing, that is, one must obtain a pass-mark in all the subjects. The pass-mark is 50.

 

6.Adaptation Period. Foundation Programme

The Adaptation Period (AP) is granted by the Medical Council or as authorised by the Health Care Professions Appeal’s Board. It is applied in accordance with EU legislation, EU Directive 2005/36EC, the Health Care Professions Act 2003, Cap. 464. (HCPA 2003) and the Public Services Management Code (PSMC).

The duration of the Adaptation Period (AP) and the placements to which the Adaptation Period Doctor (APD) is assigned are determined/decided by the Medical Council.

However, these may be subject to any conditions imposed by the Appeal’s Board, where applicable.

In accordance to EU law and the PSMC, the AP is not remunerated.

You may alternatively opt to apply for the two (2) year Foundation Programme with the Foundation School Malta, however, please be informed that the Medical Council will only be able to grant you Provisional Registration once you have been accepted for the Foundation Programme and a formal approval is provided. Permanent/Full registration is granted after the successful completion of the two (2) year Foundation Programme.
